An irrigation trial is carried out in an adult hazelnut orchard, trained on single trunk on Nebrodi mount to determine the best irrigation volume and timing.

The aim of the research is the evaluation of old and new hazelnut varieties in Sicily for detecting the most promising ones.

Project Summary:

The experimental field is located in a typical production area of Sicily. The following cultivars are present: `Butler', `Corabel', `Camponica', `Glosca Molla', `Ennis', `Fertile de Coutard', `Gironell', `Mortarella', `Merveille de Bollwiller', `Nocchione', `Negret', `Segorbe', `Tonda di Giffoni', `Tonda Romana'.

The most important data are recorded i.e. productivity, nut and seed weight and size, kernel per cent, blank per cent.

In a hazelnut orchard located on the Nebrodi mount, a fertilization trial is carried out with four levels and four replicates of six plants each. This trial was carried out to improve the knowledge on nutrition requirements of the hazelnut in that area.

Project Objectives:

The cultivar `Tonda di Giffoni' is one of the most important cultivars of the Campania region and is one of the best for the qualitative and processing characters. Because it is a population cultivar, we think it is important and necessary to begin research on clonal selection to detect the best and most promising clones.

Project Summary:

A Five year trial is carried out concerning the clonal selection of the hazelnut cv. `Tonda di Giffoni'. The study aims to locate and to separate plants with agronomic and technological qualities superior to the present variety standard. With the results obtained it is possible to separate and multiply 34 clones which are particularly interesting for further research.

To select new varieties with no or reduced suckering habit; to obtain from different species or interspecific hybrids of Corylus nonsuckering plants to be used as rootstocks for cultivated varieties.

Project Summary:

From gamma rays irradiated plants of TGL, mutants were isolated which did not sucker; these were propagated and evaluated in the field. Different progeny from C. colurna, C. chinensis, C. heterophylla were tried as rootstocks with reference to their vegetative aspects: absence of sucker, vigour, root system.

To obtain improved varieties with regards to resistance to big bud mite, high productivity, precocity and high percent kernel, round nuts of medium size

Project Summary:

Controlled crosses are performed using `Tonda Gentile delle Langhe' as female parent; male parents are `Daria', `S. Benedetto' (C. maxima), `Barcelona', `Tonda di Giffoni' and `Tonda Romana'. The seedlings obtained are evaluated with regards to their vegetative, phenological, reproductive and carpological characters.

Four different fertilization and soil management types are evaluated: mineral fertilizers alone or with manure are supplied to soil managed by tilling, no tilling + herbicides or no tilling + grass + herbicides along the row.
