The meeting was held from 18 to 23 September 1978 at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain) in the Laboratorio Oceanográfico of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. It was attended by seven scientists from Japan, Morocco, Spain, the FAO/UNDP Project for the Development of Fisheries in the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) and FAO Headquarters (see Appendix 1). Participants were welcomed by Mr. Bravo de Laguna, the Convenor of the meeting, who stressed the importance of cephalopod resources for the region's fisheries and the need to refine their assessment. He presented the provisional agenda which was approved (see Appendix 2). Mr. J.-P. Troadec (FAO) was nominated rapporteur.
