As this century draws to a close and the world looks forward to the new millennium, a reformed and streamlined FAO stands ready to work with all Member Nations in their efforts to achieve food security for their peoples, a goal to which they pledged themselves at the World Food Summit. The great wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise that FAO has accumulated in more than half a century since its foundation, part of which has been referred to in this paper, constitutes a major resource on which governments can draw in their fight against hunger and malnutrition. FAO is determined to provide all the support possible to help them win the battle.
