This chapter briefly describes the characteristics of the sample survey areas and outlines the reasons why a particular location was selected. It also summarizes how data were collected and the problems encountered in the process. Some of the variables used for data analysis are also presented here. A complete list of the variables used for each country study is found in the annexes to this synthesis report.
