Table 3.1 shows the detailed size and composition of our survey sample. Insofar as possible, a more or less even distribution of smallholder and commercial hog and broiler raisers was taken. Such is the case for all areas except Southern Tagalog, where the sample of smallholder hog producers was significantly larger than that of commercial producers (62% vs. 38%).
The samples were stratified according to the scale of operation (i.e., smallholder vs. commercial). For hog producers, those operating at less than 100 sow were categorized as smallholders; otherwise, they were classified as commercial raisers. For broiler production, farms that raise less than 10,000 heads were considered smallholders, while those producing more than that level were placed in the commercial category.
Further stratification reflects the production arrangement (i.e., independent vs. contract). For independent commercial hog producers, a subclassification was also made for those operating between the 100 and 1,000 sow level (i.e., medium commercial) and those operating at sow levels greater than 1,000 (large commercial).

In sum, a total of 207 hog farms (110 smallholder farms and 97 commercial farms) were surveyed in three areas: Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, and Bukidnon. For broiler farms, 116 farms constituted the sample, of which 62 were classified as smallholder and 54 as commercial.
