ABSTRACT The present paper is the fi rst in the HIV/AIDS Programme Working Paper Series and seeks to establish the linkages between agriculture (in the broader sense) and health, using both an extensive review of the existing literature and quantitative data from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO). It argues for a better understanding of the complex cause and effect relationship between health and agriculture. It highlights the linkages as evidence from various research studies, exposes the gaps in knowledge and policy, and advocates for further investment in research and policy interventions that will address these linkages. In terms of policy, the paper argues for a strong, multisectoral approach to interventions that places priority on the inter-relationships between agriculture and health, so to adequately address the multiple livelihood needs of the rural poor. |
