Preface

Preface

This paper outlines the major features of the research undertaken by the Socio-Economic Unit (SEW) (1) of the Integrated Range and Livestock Development Project (IRLDP).

[ 1 The SEU is composed of a senior socio-economist and four group promoters (and four motivators at the level of the communities). ]

Rather than attempting to synthesize the findings of this research (2), it aims to clarify concepts, present methodologies and tools, identify relevant fields of research, in order to highlight the major lessons learned from the SEU work.

[ 2 For more detailed information on these findings, see the following reports: 'Socio-economic Study of the Asghara-Wazulun Valley and the Kach Mulazai Area' IRLDP working paper n. 4, March 1994; 'Nomadic Pastoralists in the Highlands of Balochistan', IRLDP working paper n.7, April 1995, both written by Angelo Bonfiglioli; and Results of the evaluation of IRLDP activities in the Asghara-Wazulun Valley", IRLDP field note n.2, prepared by Angelo Bonfiglioli, with Attaullah Khan, Faridullah Khan and Khatmu Nisa, May 1995. ]

Another working paper will present the main aspects of the community development programme, focusing particularly on the creation of an institutional framework at local level and the initiation of specific activities for the socio-economic development of local communities.

After outlining the principal research objectives and methodology adopted, the paper sets out the basic concepts guiding the approach, highlighting the far-reaching effects they have on development initiatives.

The main fields of research are also discussed with the relevant issues that each of them raise.

A number of annexes illustrate various aspects of this research giving useful tools to field researchers operating in similar contexts.
