Above normal and well distributed rains were registered in July. They improved notably in areas were they were insufficient in June. Wet plantings have been completed. Early millet and sorghum are in the elongation stage and are developing satisfactorily. Soil moisture reserves are adequate. Satellite imagery indicates that precipitation remained abundant and reached northern areas during the first dekad of August.
Pastures are regenerating on a large scale. The overall pest activity is calm but infestations of grasshoppers are reported in the department of Zinder. Floral pests are reported in Dosso and Maradi departments. Isolated Desert Locusts may be present in a few areas in Tamesna and in Aïr. Small-scale breeding could occur now that the summer rains have begun.
