Work was started off Benguela on 19 February. Sampling in the school area of pelagic fish off Benguela - Lobito was incomplete due to severe damage of the second mid water trawl, the first having been also severely damaged in Baia dos Tigres. Attempts were made to cover important aggregations of small pelagic fish acoustically both by day and during nighttime. The prepositioned bottom trawl hauls on the shelf were all made during daylight hours and distributed at intervals over the total accessible depth range. Trawl hauls made in areas and at depth ranges where commercial trawlers operated were noted for later identification. After two comparative hauls at 250 m depth in the slope indicated that the rose shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris lifts off the bottom at night, hauls in the upper range of the slope were only made during daytime. Test fishing at 450 - 550 m for the striped red shrimp Aristeus varidens was made at night. Fishing with mid water trawl for identification and sampling of aggregations of pelagic fish was made at night because of the low catchability especially of large sized sardinellas.
A one day stop was made in Luanda on 1-2 March for change of cruiseleader and Angolan scientists. Departing Luanda the shelf northwards was covered with regular acoustic transects about 10 nm apart. Random located bottom trawl hauls were laid out at daytime where bottom conditions permitted. Due to fewer acoustic registrations than expected the vessel reached Cabinda before the plan. It was therefore decided to return to an area off Cabeca da Cobra where juvenile Trachurus trecae was registrated, in order to improve the accuracy of the biomass estimate. One day was spent on this. Thereafter the vessel returned to the area off Pta das Palmeirinhas to resurvey the resources in that area, with the same objective as above. Finally the vessel completed its work with a series of bottom trawl hauls on the slope and the shelf a little north of Luanda. The survey was completed at 16 March with a short call at Luanda to disembark the Angolan scientific staff, where after the vessel steamed to Pointe Noir for a one month lay-up.
Figure 1 and 2 show the course track with fishing stations and the hydrographic profiles.
A total of 150 trawl hauls were made and the vessel steamed 4050 nm.
