Synopsis (short abstract) In the tropics most of the steepland areas are settled by small-scale farming families where livelihoods may be endangered by land degradation and associated loss of productivity. This bulletin brings concepts and principles of good land husbandry into focus, as a basis for developing different ways of thinking about safe management of steeplands within the environmental, cultural and economic context of the farm families that inhabit them. The translation of the concepts and principles of good land husbandry into field practice will require practical actions that are well adjusted to the site and farmer-specific conditions where they would be applied.

    This project was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Its objectives were to reverse the degradation of forest ecosystems, recover forest areas under degradation processes, mainly in the Imataca Forest Reserve, and promote the institutionalization of these activities in forest management at the national level. The project made a significant contribution in terms of generation and systematization of information; methodological developments to estimate carbon emissions, reservoirs and sequestration, and compilation of information for the National Integrated Forest Information System; strengthen institutional and community capacities, and promote the application of sustainable forest management practices under a co-management scheme. Important co-benefits were also generated, such as the creation of the Tukupu Community Social Property Company, which is the first Indigenous Peoples' forestry company established in the country, and the proposed Presidential Decree for the Creation of the National Forest Co-management System.

    This local level land resources assessment methodology (LADA-Local) was produced within the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (LADA) project. See Box 1 for the LADA project objectives and outcomes and the website www.fao.org/nr/lada for further information. The main purpose of LADA-Local is to provide a standard methodological approach and tool-kit for the assessment of land degradation processes, their causes and impacts at local1 level in collabor ation with local stakeholders and communities. The focus is on human-induced land degradation; however, natural degradation processes are also addressed. For a more balanced and complete understanding, the approach also assesses the extent to which land resources (soil, vegetation, water) and landscapes/ecosystems are being conserved and/or improved by sustainable land management (SLM) practices.
