    Women face a higher prevalence of food insecurity than do men, both on a global scale and across all regions. This paper delves into the global determinants contributing to the gender gap in food insecurity and explores how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced its trajectory. Additionally, it estimates the impact of improvements in food security and incomes possible if gender gaps on farm productivity and wages were closed. Utilizing data from the Food Insecurity Experience Scale gathered from over 700 000 individuals across 121 countries, this study reveals that individuals aged 25–34 years, irrespective of their gender, and women residing in rural areas have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. The econometric model allows the authors to estimate the elasticities of food security to income, which they then use to simulate the potential macrolevel benefits for the economy and food security if we were to eliminate the gender gaps in farm productivity and wages within agrifood systems. The findings suggest that addressing these disparities could result in an approximate USD 1 trillion increase in global gross domestic product and lift approximately 45 million people out of food insecurity. Additionally, the authors estimate that eliminating these gender disparities could reduce the current gap in food insecurity between women and men by at least 57 percent.     In the context of global challenges such as climate change, conflict and environmental crises, all of which are exacerbating poverty and hunger around the world, there is a need for urgent action informed by the best available science and evidence. This background paper to the guidance that FAO is developing on strengthening science–policy interfaces at the national level sets out to provide an overview of existing models and activities used for developing and operating science–policy systems and supporting the use of evidence, to transform global agrifood systems. Emphasis is placed on low- and middle-income countries, but examples from high-income countries are also included. Three high-level models are presented: the production-focused model, the policy-oriented model and the integrated model. Findings from the empirical cases and the evaluation data are distilled into lessons for strengthening each model, as well as suggesting ten priority recommendations for national science–policy engagement for agrifood systems.

    Country-level ASIS: an agricultural drought monitoring system 2018

    This brochure summarize the description, background, methodology, implementation and the potential of the agricultural drought monitoring system tools. The tool uses satellite data to detect agricultural areas (farmland) in which crops might be affected by drought. The country-level version is based on the general methodological principles used in the Agriculture Stress Index System (ASIS), which is globally operational at FAO-Rome as a form of technical support to the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS). This is a an advocacy material to explain stakeholders the potencial of using the tool at their countries.
