Synopsis (short abstract) This manual is one of the outcomes of the 1996 World Food Summit resolutions on the need to achieve global food security. It examines the serious and worsening problems of animal diseases and veterinary health worldwide. Animal diseases are a major constraint to livestock production and safe utilization of animal products everywhere. They are devastating for poor livestock farmers and farming communities in developing countries. Improved animal health for poverty and sustainable livelihood exami nes practical ways of reducing poverty and creating sustainable livelihoods among rural populations in the developing world by improving the health of livestock. Demand for animal products is likely to increase dramatically in the next two decades, and producers will benefit from increased trade oopportunities. The extent to which producers in poor countries will share the benefits depends on the production levels they can achieve and on whether their products will be accpeted as tradable commod ities. These determining factors are inextricably linked to the health of their livestock. The manual looks at ways of improving national animal health policies and delivery systems through objective analysis of problems and training of personnel; the importance of raising public awareness is underlined. It stresses the need for global response strategies to support animal and public health issues and sustain national and local initiatives. An important element of the manual is that its lessons are drawn from extensive practical experience worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

    The livestock sector plays an essential role in agricultural and economic development as well as in food security. Public concern about the safety of foods of animal origin has recently heightened due to problems that have arisen with outbreaks of food-borne infections (BSE, E.coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, etc.) and chemical contamination (pesticides, heavy metals, dioxins), as well as due to growing concerns about veterinary drug residues and microbial resistance to antibiotics. Th ese problems have drawn attention to the production practices within the livestock industry and have prompted health professionals and the food industry to closely scrutinise quality and safety problems that can arise in foods of animal origin. In addition to national food safety, these issues have serious implications for international trade in livestock products and animal feed.

    Expert Consultation on Community-based Veterinary Public Health Systems 2004

    The Expert Consultation on Community-based Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Systems was held in Rome on 27-28 October 2003. The objectives of the consultation were to consider and make specific recommendations regarding the delivery of community-based VPH systems, with special emphasis on developing countries in the following major areas: - surveillance methodologies for zoonotic diseases; - significance of participatory epidemiology and rapid appraisal techniques; - public and private VP H community delivery systems; - monitoring and evaluation of VPH systems; - current community-based VPH systems in sub-Saharan Africa, including examples from South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania; - training and public education in VPH at community levels; - multidisciplinary approaches to VPH delivery systems at community levels. This publication contains the contributions of the experts and other participants of the consultation, and is intended to assist veterinary pub lic health services in developing regions in the implementation of community-based systems.

    The Abyei Administrative Area (AAA) is a contested zone located on the central border between South Sudan and Sudan. Its status has remained unresolved since South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011, and the governments failed to agree on the border division. A United Nations peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), has since monitored the situation. It is entrusted with overseeing demilitarisation and maintaining security in the area. Mistrust and lack of dialogue have been critical components of this conflict. FAO has played a key role in initiating and facilitating a process focused on dialogue and building social cohesion at grassroots level, contributing to wider sustaining peace initiatives. FAO identified a window of opportunity through the technical delivery of community-based animal health veterinary services (embedded in an agricultural livelihood support strategy), in an effort to improve inter-community relations and contribute to s ustaining peace objectives.
