    An account of the workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam from 18 to 20 September 2007. Attended by 13 APFIC member countries, the objective of the workshop was to evaluate the potential for capture fisheries and aquaculture certification schemes in the region and to examine issues relating to their sustainability and implementation. In particular, the costs and benefits of certification schemes for small-scale fisheries were analyzed. Conclusions and recommendations are included in the repo rt.

    Fifth regional consultative forum meeting of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC): Responsible management of fisheries and aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific 2014

    This is the final report of the fifth regional consultative forum meeting of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) convened in Hyderabad, India from 19 to 21 June 2014. It was attended by 85 participants from 17 countries and 28 national, regional and inter-governmental partner organizations and projects. Forum participants came to the meeting to develop and reach consensus on ways of implementing policies and action plans designed to address the major challenges confronting the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the region. Issues discussed included blue growth for the responsible management of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia-Pacific, lessons learned and future directions of the marine environmental and fisheries initiatives in Asia, and promoting sustainable intensification of aquaculture for food and nutritional security in Asia-Pacific. Recommendations of the meeting are included in the report.

    Development of voluntary certification schemes and branding initiatives for capture fisheries are issues of increasing importance, especially in Asia-Pacific. Few studies, however, have been undertaken to quantitatively assess the net benefits to the fisheries sector of either certification or branding. Governments, producers, exporters and retailers need to base their decisions on whether to engage in certification or branding on a rational assessment of the relative costs and benefits over tim e. This publication presents some guidance on the issues involved and how to conduct a cost-benefit analysis in helping producers and exporters improve the net value-added of their business operations.
