Synopsis (short abstract) The guide Step it up with Equality provides a set of questions, answers, means, and tools for FAO staff and partners to mainstream gender issues as part of the shared commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment, in light of the major United Nations goals for human development and social justice. The guide focuses on each phase of the project cycle, defining the steps and tools to facilitate gender mainstreaming. It also includes a gender mainstreaming checklist, an FAO catalogue of literature and tools on gender, a mechanism for systematizing good practices, and a portfolio of actions and examples on gender mainstreaming.

    The new Regional Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan 2024–2027 for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region aims to ensure its applicability across the diverse and complex contexts within the NENA region. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of the region, characterized by a spectrum of situations, the strategy incorporates a precise set of indicators that extend until 2027. This extended timeframe facilitates a systematic review of the strategy, allowing for adjustments and refinements to be made, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness until the targeted horizon of 2030. A collaborative agreement between FAO colleagues and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITCILO) brought in experts in gender equality and results-based management to develop this strategy.

It provides project formulators with practical guidance and tools to implement the gender related requirements established in the different phases of the FAO project cycle, and to support the formulation of projects and programs that contribute to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems, as foreseen by FAO’s mandate.

    Commit to Grow Equality (CGE) is a global process launched by FAO and a diverse group of partners to accelerate gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems through financing, investments and partnerships. The objective is to unite key stakeholders to commit to make agrifood systems work better for women, their communities, and the planet by 2030. In particular, CGE aims to contribute to the achievement of SDGs 1, 2 and 5. CGE will enable a diverse range of actors, both governmental and non-governmental, to report against a strategic set of commitments specifically linked to agrifood systems. Through their new and newly aligned commitment(s) to various dimensions of the CGE Commitments Matrix, these actors are agreeing to take specific action(s) to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment within their own domains. The matrix offers the opportunity to identify areas for enhanced impact, align and complement action, increase transparency and learning, and remind all actors of their commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
