Synopsis (short abstract) This publication assesses the migration and forest interface. It describes why migration outcomes in forest landscapes matter, what drives them, how they can be shaped, and who can do what to optimize those outcomes. It draws qualified conclusions about the benefits of a positive approach to managing the complexity of forest-linked migration. Such an approach seeks to increase understanding on migration and forests, clarify tenure in forest-linked migration places, destigmatize migration, facilitate movements and flows of people, cash and information (except where they threaten high conservation value forests), develop migration-aware forest policies and extension support, and empower local member-based organizations as key actors in alliance with support providers and governments dedicated to optimizing outcomes of forest-linked migration.

The zero-deforestation movement has gained considerable momentum as governments and companies enter into commitments to curb deforestation. The most innovative are multi-stakeholder initiatives, where governments and international organi- zations have joined with the private sector and civil society organizations in making commit- ments to reduce deforestation. These pledges have created opportunities for improved forest governance by envisaging the private sector at the centre of the movement. They have also encouraged a broader understanding of the drivers and and consequences of deforestation, and how these can be more realistically addressed.

The effects of climate change are threatening the viability of rural livelihoods and increasing pressures to migrate. Managing climate mobility is one of the priorities of FAO’s work on rural migration. It aims to help people build climate-resilient livelihoods and thereby reduce the pressure to migrate; and help migrants and diaspora contribute to inclusive climate action. The leaflet is part of a brochure that presents FAO’s work on rural migration, along with each priority for action. The leaflet includes a description of what FAO does, with whom and why, presenting tangible results and stories from the field.

This fact-sheet shows the two-lesson course that focuses on the impact of climate change on rural livelihoods and how climate change and variability interact with other factors to drive migration. It considers the conditions necessary for migration to be an adaptation strategy to climate change that can ultimately strengthen resilience, so that migration is a choice not a necessity.
