Synopsis (short abstract) The document provides an overall vision and framework intended to accelerate aquaculture transformation in Asia and the Pacific region through innovations and investment, and to provide guidance to partners from the public, private and development communities to actively engage with the region in transforming aquaculture to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable food systems. The document serves as background information for discussion in the High-Level Meeting on Aquaculture Transformation in Asia and the Pacific Region, 22–23 November 2022, organized by the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific. The document is broadly aligned with FAO’s Blue Transformation Roadmap, paying specific attention to the context and needs of aquaculture within Asia and the Pacific region. The Paper translates the Roadmap into a vision and priority actions for aquaculture transformation in the region by 2030.

The FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific jointly sponsored and implemented a regional training workshop to support scaling up of innovative integrated agro-aquaculture (IAA) for Blue Growth in selected countries in the Asia-Pacific region at Fubao Culture Town & Spa Hotel in Kunming, Yunnan province, China, from 12 to 17 June 2017. As an FAO Reference Centre for Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Research and Training, and as the technical backstopping agency for the successful introduction of integrated rice-fish culture practices in Hani terraced rice fields, the Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) partnered with FAO in the organization of the training workshop.

This is the final report of the Sixth Asia Pacific Fisheries Commission (APFIC) Regional Consultative Forum Meeting (RCFM) convened in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 8-10 February 2016 under the theme “Promoting Blue Growth in fisheries and aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region”. The “Blue Sectors” of fisheries and aquaculture make a significant contribution to food and nutrition security and the livelihoods of millions in the Asia Pacific Region. The meeting heard how these sectors face a range of challe nges and how Blue Growth Initiatives can support member countries to address them. The meeting was successful at providing member countries, partners and regional organizations a platform to present progress, discuss key issues and make recommendations to FAO.

A Consultative Workshop on Fisheries and Aquaculture Knowledge Management and Information Dissemination in Africa, co-organized with the African Union - InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources, is planned to take on 13 November 2023 in Lusaka, Zambia. The main purpose of this workshop is to bring together representatives from African Union Members States, international donors, Regional Fishery Bodies and Regional Economic Communities for a brainstorming session aimed at generating recommendations to enhance the capacity of a fishery and aquaculture knowledge hub in Africa and to align with the continent’s policy and industry expectations, in coherence with the Blue Transformation Roadmap and Sustainable Development Goals.
