Synopsis (short abstract) The Global Action Plan of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–2028 (UNDFF) recognizes the need to promote rural communication services (RCS) to advance sustainable food systems. RCS comprise demand-led communication processes, media applications and institutional arrangements to respond to the needs of family farmers and rural populations in a sustained and inclusive manner.This report presents a comprehensive summary of the virtual UNDFF Forum on Inclusive Rural Communication Services for Family Farming, which took place on 11 July 2022. Organized by FAO’s Communication for Development (ComDev) team, in collaboration with specialized communication entities, the forum marked the global culmination of an extensive consultative process. The report captures the key outcomes, insights, and strategic recommendations from these global and regional processes, offering guidance for promoting and advancing RCS for family farmers.

The United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-28 (UNDFF) aims at promoting integrated actions and cross-sectoral policies to advance family farming. It recognizes Rural Communication Services as key factors and assets to be developed and promoted as part of family farming and sustainable food systems.This two-page flyer offers access to recently-published studies, reports, and other documents related to RCS and other inclusive innovation approaches. It also promotes the hybrid technical seminar on Rural Communication Services and Inclusive Innovation Approaches for Family Farming on 29 April 2024, which provides an opportunity to share perspectives on RCS, achievements and innovative approaches, and crucially – set the path for the way forward.

Supporting dialogic communication and knowledge sharing processes is a powerful means of helping farmer organizations, indigenous peoples, rural communities and civil society organizations to make their voices heard and be part of the development agenda. Rural communication services and policies can translate farmers’ right to communication into fair and transparent regulatory frameworks that will allow equitable access to information and communication services in rural areas and ensure the acti ve participation of smallholder and family farmers. During the International Year of Family Farming, FAO convened an international Forum on Communication for Development & Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM), in collaboration with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). The Forum participants addressed opportunities for promoting rural communication services as sustained, inclusive and efficient communication processes involving family farmers and the rural populatio n, and considered how to better integrate these services into agricultural policies.
