Synopsis (short abstract) Scientific names and common names in AGROVOC are not consistently used: some scientific names are descriptors and some are non-descriptors (even if they are the main accepted scientific name for an organism); likewise, some common names are descriptors and some are non-descriptors. The main reason for this is that during indexing somebody may decide to tag a document with the scientific name while somebody else may decide to tag it with the common name. In addition, experts that use AGROVOC only for searching or navigation (not for indexing) would like to use their preferred term, be it the scientific name or the common name.

    The movement to share data has been on the rise in the last decade and lately in the agricultural domain. Similarly platforms for publishing scientific and sta-tistical datasets have sprouted and have improved visibility and availability of datasets. Yet there are still constraints in making datasets discoverable and re-usable. Commonly agreed semantics, authority lists to index datasets and stand-ard formats and protocols to expose data are now essential. This paper explains how the CIARD RING provides a global linked data catalog of datasets for ag-riculture. The first part of this paper will describe the Linked Data layer of the CIARD RING focusing on the data model, semantics used and the CIARD RING LOD publication. The second part will provide examples of re-use of da-ta from the RING. The paper concludes by describing the future steps in the de-velopment of the CIARD RING.

    In the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the need to revamp its popular agriculture vocabulary AGROVOC using Semantic Web knowledge representation standards combined with the need to provide a collaborative environment for development and maintenance purposes, pushed forward the realization of a dedicated AGROVOC thesaurus maintenance tool. With the progressive standardization of the AGROVOC knowledge model, following recent Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS ) recommendations by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and with the addition of more FAO-maintained vocabularies, the former “AGROVOC Concept Server Workbench” has become a general-purpose framework for thesauri and vocabulary development and is now reborn as “ VocBench”.     Thesaurus alignment for Linked Data publishing 2012

    As part of the publication of the AGROVOC thesaurus as Linked Data (LD), AGROVOC is now mapped with six well-known thesauri in the agricultural domain, i.e., EUROVOC, NALT, GEMET, STW, TheSoz, RAMAEU. To find matching candidates, known matching algorithms discussed in the literature and available from public API were used. Results were evaluated by a domain expert, and almost total precision obtained. The candidate matches that were confirmed have already been added to the LD version of AGROVOC. Moreover, the owners of two of the thesauri mapped with AGROVOC have included in their data the mapping we identified. From this work, we conclude that we achieved our goal to enhance the Linked Data.
