No results found.This volume contains monographs prepared at the eightieth meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which met inRome, Italy, from 16 to 25 June 2015. The toxicological and dietary exposure monograph in this volume summarizes the safety and dietary exposure data on a contaminant group (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) discussed at the eightieth meeting. Monographs on seven food additives discussed at that meeting have been previously published in the WHO Food Additives series (FAS 71), and a monograph on a second contaminant group (non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls) has been published as a separate supplement in the WHO Food Additives series. This volume and others in the WHO Food Additives series contain information that is useful to those who produce and use food additives and veterinary drugs and those involved with controlling contaminants in food, government and food regulatory officers, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological laboratories and universities. -

No results found.This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the toxicological data on T-2 and HT-2 and the combined dietary exposure was re-evaluated. At its ninetieth meeting, JECFA had reviewed the information that had become available after the fifty-sixth meeting on T-2 and HT-2 concerning analytical methods, sampling, effect of processing, prevention and control, occurrence in food commodities and dietary exposure. The report summarizes the main conclusions of the Committee regarding the group acute reference dose and tolerable daily intake for T-2, HT-2 and DAS, as well as the risk characterization and recommendations. -

No results found.New food sources and production systems (NFPS) is a rapidly evolving and innovative sector that covers a range of foods from plant-based food products to products arising from technological innovations such as cell-based food production and precision fermentation.The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to help prepare its Members for the arrival of NFPS products or new foods on the market by providing sufficient information to suitably protect the health of consumers and implement fair practices in trade. Using foresight approaches, FAO has been monitoring this emerging sector and evaluating the opportunities and challenges it brings for agrifood systems, especially in the context of food safety.Based on this work, three focus areas were selected for a Food Safety Foresight Technical Meeting held at FAO headquarters in Rome from 13 to 17 November 2023. These areas – plant-based food products (that mimic animal-derived foods), precision fermentation and 3D food printing (3DFP) – were chosen based on their growing popularity in the NFPS space, and their relevance to food safety. -

As it cycles through air, soil, and water, nitrogen is fundamental to ecosystem functionality. However, improper management of nitrogen in agrifood systems can degrade air, water, and soil quality, while excessive extraction from soils leads to soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and exacerbation of climate change. This FAO report provides a comprehensive overview of nitrogen's role, and the challenges associated with its use in agrifood systems. It explores solutions for improving nitrogen management in crop and livestock systems to enhance nitrogen use efficiency while reducing pollution. Additionally, it highlights the potential of circular bioeconomy approaches to optimize nitrogen management and minimize nitrogen losses. By adopting balanced nitrogen practices, agrifood systems can be transformed to ensure food security, improved nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods for farmers while minimizing negative environmental impacts. -
