No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its eleventh session in Marrakech, Morocco, from 1 to 5 December 2008. The session was attended by delegates from 18 Members of the Commission. The session appraised the achievements by its subsidiary bodies, the activities of the regional projects to support GFCM as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). It acknowledged the progress to impr ove the stock assessment process notably through undertaking joint stock assessment of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and small pelagic species and harmonizing protocols to undertake surveys at sea. The Committee took note of progress achieved in the framework of data collection and processing through Task 1 and STATLANT 37A form. It also noted the progress made on issues such as GFCM logbook and promoting activities and knowledge on the ecosystem approach to fisheries, recreational fish eries, gear selectivity and bycatch. SAC further reviewed fishery management proposals emanating from its Sub-Committees and formulated related advice with regard to: i) management of demersal and small pelagic fisheries; ii) implementation of the 40-mm square mesh; iii) establishment of a new fisheries restricted area in the Golf of Lions; iv) establishment of a Regional fleet register. It also suggested to amend some GFCM decisions, gave guidance regarding the activities of the Joint GFCM/ICCAT [International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas] Working Group on Large Pelagic Species and endorsed suggestions concerning the update of the SAC glossary and the priority species list, and identified actions to address the issue of monitoring the fishing capacity. The Committee agreed upon its workplan for 2009. -

No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its ninth session at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 24 to 27 Octobre 2006. Delegates from 18 Members of the Commission participated. The Committee reviewed the intersessional activities of its four Sub-Committees and those of the Regional projects supporting the Commission, as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). SAC reviewed and refor mulated management advice; it furthermore showed appreciation for a gradual implementation of the 40 mm square mesh codend of bottom trawls. The Committee took note of progress achieved on the measurement, calibration and allocation of fishing effort, and adopted the statistical scheme (Task 1 matrix) for the data collection on Operational Units (OUs). The SAC encouraged the use of socio-economic indicators in fisheries management, including in recreational fisheries. The Committee proposed to relaunch the activities of the GFCM/ICCAT Joint Working Group on Large Pelagic Species. The Committee agreed upon its Workplan for 2007. -

No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its eighteenth session in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 21 to 23 March 2016. The session was attended by delegates from 20 contracting parties, 7 representatives of observers, representatives of the FAO, including its regional projects, and the GFCM Secretariat. The Committee reviewed the work carried out during the 2015–2016 intersession, including within its newly established subr egional subsidiary bodies, two of which had met for the first time in 2016 (Subregional Committee for the Adriatic Sea and Subregional Committee for the Central Mediterranean). On the occasion of the publication on The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries (SoMFi) 2016, the Committee examined the main highlights of the report, including key characteristics of Mediterranean fleet and catches, socio-economic, and bycatch, highlighting its importance as a a flagship publication aimed at re gularly disseminating information on fisheries in the GFCM area of application. The Committee formulated advice on the following aspects: i) marine environment and ecosystems, including vulnerable marine ecosystems, marine spatial protection measures and bycatch; ii) statistics and information, including the implementation of the Data Collection Reference Framework (DCRF); iii) status of Mediterranean stocks and associated scientific advice, including at the subregional level. At the Mediterrane an level, the Committee discussed in particular the specific cases of red seabream (Pagellus bogaraevo) in the Strait of Gibraltar and of European eel (Anguilla anguilla), recognizing the importance of collecting and analysing accurate data towards the development of a Mediterranean adaptive regional management plan for this species.
