On the occasion of the International Year of Mountains-2002, FAO and its partners undertook a large-scale assessment and global review of the current status and future trends of integrated and participatory watershed management. The overall objectives were to promote the exchange and dissemination of experiences in implementing watershed management projects in the decade from 1990 to 2000 and to identify the vision for a new generation of watershed management programmes and projects. This resour ce book represents a summary and critical analysis of the rich discussions and vast materials that emerged during the review, as well as the review's findings and recommendations. It presents the state of the art in watershed management, promotes further reflection and creative thinking and proposes new ideas and approaches for future watershed management programmes and projects. This publication has been written primarily for field-level watershed management practitioners and local decision-mak ers involved in watershed management at the district or municipality level. It will also be a useful source of information for other readers such as senior officers and consultants specialized in other areas, evaluators, policy-makers and students of watershed management.

This paper outlines the role of sociological analysis in the design of agricultural investment projects, particularly those being prepared for funding by multilateral financing institutions. It is intended mainly to assist mission leaders as well as sociologists, anthropologists and socio-economists working for the FAO Investment Centre. Some observations and recommendations will also be relevant to Governments, lending agencies and consulting firms engaged in agricultural investment project for mulation. It covers basic concepts and principles, sociological analysis required for different types of projects, the range of options for its integration in the investment project cycle, and provides a practical guideline for the design and implementation of diagnostic studies of target groups and their farming systems.

The presence of tsetse and trypanosomiasis (T&T) in vast areas of sub-Saharan Africa is a major constraint to livestock-agricultural development. However, the impact of the disease varies with and between countries, regions and agro-ecological zones. Therefore, prior to any intervention it is essential to evaluate the profitability of different approaches towards controlling the vector and/or the disease in each individual project or zone. This ensures that a project is assessed on its own merit s and not merely on its possible technical contribution to a potential continent-wide programme.
