Synopsis (short abstract) Despite high economic growth, increasing per capita income, and high agricultural production and productivity, Asia-Pacific remains home to the majority of the world's poor and hungry. The region faces several challenges and constraints to sustainable agricultural development which call for collaboration at regional and subregional levels to attain sustainable poverty reduction and food security. To address these issues, FAO, UNESCAP and ADB jointly organized a roundtable meeting in Bangkok, Tha iland on 23 to 24 February 2004 to discuss how Asia and the Pacific can meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and World Food Summit Declaration through opportunities offered by subregional and regional collaboration, derive lessons learned and formulate a future course of action. The report provides a summary of the discussions and statements made by the high-level participants, as well as the Declaration adopted by the roundtable.

    Reducing food insecurity, vulnerability and malnutrition is central to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the World Food Summit targets. FAO is technically assisting national governments and related stakeholders to better plan, target and monitor food security and programmes, and progress is continuously being made in addressing problems of hunger and malnutrition. FAO’s food insecurity and vulnerability information and mapping systems, commonly known as FIVIMS, i nclude the networks of national information systems that assemble, analyse and disseminate data on food insecurity and vulnerability. At the international level FIVIMS implements diverse activities in support of national information systems for them to become part of an international information exchange network, and at the country level FIVIMS works with a network of information systems that gather and analyze relevant national and subnational data that measure food insecurity and vulnerabilit y. The Asia Pacific Network for Food and Nutrition, in collaboration with the Asia FIVIMS project, has undertaken an important initiative through this regional expert consultation and meeting to review food insecurity and vulnerability assessment methodologies used in selected countries of the Asian region. This report provides a summary of the presentations and discussions on FIVIMS methodologies and an update on country FIVIMS activities.

    This book is an output of a regional experts’ consultation meeting on “UN Decade of Family Farming: Formulating Strategies and Action Plan to Strengthen Smallholder Family Farmers in South Asia”, 5-6 November 2020 organized by SAARC Agriculture Center (SAC), Bangladesh in collaboration with Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA), Philippines, and the International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP), India, and the technical assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP) Thailand. This book is the concrete result of active engagement and participations of SAARC Member States’ National Focal Point Experts, invited UNDFF experts, authors, and participants. This book focuses on- family farming’s constraints, challenges, opportunities, and government policies to contribute on attaining the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at country and South Asia regional levels.

    Meeting report of the Ministerial Roundtable on Zero Hunger at the 34th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific 2018

    The Ministerial RoundTable on Zero Hunger was a ministerial segment in thirty-fourth session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC) which was held in Nadi, Fiji on 12 April 2018. The objective of the Ministerial Round Table was to generate political commitment to achieve SDG 2 and translate it into actions that would benefit smallholders as well as a larger population in the region. It served to: (i) create greater awareness among Members and partners regarding the scope and achievements of the regional Zero Hunger policy processes and initiatives; and (ii) provided an overview of the regional approaches taken to address gaps and challenges to maximize impact. This event demonstrated progress made towards the Zero Hunger vision at regional and country levels, as well as the successes to date in SDG 2, achieved with support from FAO in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
