Explanatory table E (below) reports the total forest area by ownership classes as reported by Table 2 (T2) of the FRA 2005 National Country Report.

According to FRA ownership categories are defined as:

Private ownership

Land owned by individuals, families, private co-operatives, corporations, industries, private religious and educational institutions, pension or investment funds, and other private institutions.

Explanatory note

1. Private owners may be engaged in agriculture or other occupations including forestry.

Public ownership

Land owned by the State (national, state and regional governments) or government-owned institutions or corporations or other public bodies including cities, municipalities and villages.

Other ownership

Land not classified as Public or Private ownership.

Explanatory note

1. Includes land where ownership is not defined or unknown.

In the Planted Forest thematic study we have a further breakdown for Private Ownership into Corporate and Smallholders according to the definition:

Private ownership Corporate

Land owned by private companies, co-operatives, corporations, industries, private religious and educational institutions, pension or investment funds (generally large scale)

Private ownership Smallholders

Land owned by individuals or families (generally small scale)
