Section 7. Predominant purpose: supplement to FRA2005

FRA does not detail specific predominant purposes of forests. A more detailed breakdown on predominant purposes is needed for the Planted components of Semi-Natural Forests and Plantation Forests. Explanatory table F reported below shows the breakdown of predominant purposes by productive and protective categories.

Explanatory table F: Predominant purposes, definitions and abbreviations

FRA Purpose

Planted forests end use and definition

Abbreviation

Productive

Production of saw logs

Ind-Sawlog

Production of chips, pulpwood and fibre for cellulose and paper

Ind-Pulpwood/Fiber

Production of wood to be used as bio-energy on large scale

Ind-Bioenergy

Production of Non wood products (Arabic gum, rubber, palm fibres, cork...) large scale

Ind-Non Wood Prod

Production of wood for industrial uses but unspecified

Ind-Unspecified

Protective

Provision of protective services for soil, water, biodiversity (can include Non wood forest products on small scale)

Non-ind-Environmental

Provision of social and cultural services (recreation, religious, amenity...)

Non-ind-Recreation

Provision of unspecified services

Non-ind Unspecified

Provision of wood for fuel on small scale (farmers, villages, rural communities)

Non-ind-Fuelwood

Questionnaire input

Estimate of Predominant purpose for Planted Forests

In Questionnaire tables 5 (a, b), for productive and protective categories, please estimate, in %3 of area, the Predominant purpose for:

Planted components of Semi-Natural Forests (table 5a), for figures calculated in table 2b

Plantation Forests (table 5b), for figures provided in table 1.
