Figure 1 shows the course tracks and the fishing - and
hydrographical stations worked. From departure Punto Fijo the work started with
a coverage of the mouth of the Gulf of Venezuela, both the Venezuelan and
Colombian side. A hydrographical profile was worked off the Peninsula Guajira
and this could be linked to a section going into the Gulf of Venezuela taken
during the previous survey in Venezuela. The position of this section is also
Included in Figure 1. Two more sections were planned further westwards, but
these had to be cancelled due to a fault in the hydraulic system, making it
necessary to bypass the hydrographic vinches. For the same reason no trawling
were carried out after passing the Peninsula of Guajira and unto Santa Marta,
from when the trawling system was operational. The main effort during this first
coverage was to cover the shelf with acoustic transects, and using the available
leftover time for bottom trawling on the shelf and on the slope. During the last
day of the survey trawling were planned in the 250-450 bottom depth range in an
area just north of Punta Arenas. After several hours of futile searching for
acceptable bottom conditions this operation had to be cancelled.
