Appendix 1 Definitions of geographical regions and livestock production systems

This appendix presents definitions of the geographical regions and livestock production systems referred to in this study Data are presented in the study in two main classifications, a regional geographical classification derived from the presentation of data in the USDA PS&D and the FAO SOFA databases, and an economic-regional classification similar to that used by FAO, as presented by Sere (1994). Some data are presented by livestock production systems as also defined by Sere (1994) and summarised below.

Table I presents the regional geographic classification of countries used for presentation of USDA PS&D and FAO SOFA data. Table 2 presents the economic region classification used to present data in the structure of Sere (1994).

Table 3 outlines the definitions of the livestock production systems described by Sere (1994), as used in the presentation of data on feed use in Chapter 2.
