Appendix 2 Concentrate feed commodity utilization 1965/67 to 1990/92

Appendix 2 presents tabulated results of analysis of data compiled in FAO and USDA databases. FAO data were provided from the Agrostat database for feed use of different cereals, brans, oilseeds and oilmeals commodities. Data on the production, consumption, feed use and trade of the important commodities (except roots and tubers) were abstracted from the USDA PS&D (Production, Supply and Distribution) database. This compiles FAO and USDA data for most countries of the world. Data on production, consumption and trade of roots and tubers were derived from FAO Agrostat Supply and Utilization (SAU) tables prepared for the FAO Towards 2010 study. Data on land-use were abstracted from the FAO State of Food and Agriculture database (SOFA'94, see FAO, 1994). The latter compiles FAO data in a similar format to the USDA PS&D database, though it does not supply information on the utilization of commodities for feed. As far as possible, time series data were abstracted and analysed for the periods 1965/67, 1975/77, 1985/87 and 1990/92 (to comply with the periods in which FAO Agrostat data were available). Data were analysed for each three year period to provide annual averages. Time series trends and changes were calculated between these averages.

While providing the best data sources available, certain problems with these databases should be noted. Data are generally complete for the major countries and commodities, but are not consistently available for all smaller individual countries or commodities in either database. It is not clear on what basis data on feed-use of commodities is derived. Many countries are not able to report accurately on this. In the USDA PS&D database, 'feed-use' is recognised to include utilization for seeds and waste. For many countries, there are only limited or no data available on 'other concentrates'. The FAO Agrostat data analysed included only the aggregate cereals, brans, oilseeds, oil meals and cakes and roots and tubers data (ie not the individual commodity or crop data). USDA PS&D data included the major commodities, but not all minor ones used for feeds. It did not include data on the use of cereal milling residues (brans). Aggregated USDA PS&D data did not always agree with FAO Agrostat data. Data presented are derived from either source, as appropriate, with sources noted in the report text and table footnotes.

Tables 1 to 4 present the total amounts of cereals, brans, oilseeds, oilmeals and cakes, and roots and tubers utilized for livestock feeds in different geographical regions of the world (see Appendix 1 for definition of the regions). Tables 5 and 6 present the utilization of concentrate feed types by regions as a percentage of world totals in 1975/77 and 1990/92 respectively. Tables 7 and 8 present the composition of concentrate feeds utilized in different regions (as a percent of regional totals) in 1975/77 and 1990/92 respectively. Table 9 presents the relative importance of the major individual cereal commodities utilized as concentrate feeds in different world regions in 1990/92. Tables 10 and 11 present equivalent data for oilmeals and roots and tubers respectively. Tables 12 and 13 present annual percentage growth rates for the utilization of different types of concentrate feeds over the periods 1975/77 to 1985/87 and 1985/87 to 1990/92 respectively.
