Impact of Changing Market Forces and Policies on Structural Change in the Livestock Industries of Selected Fast-Growing Developing Countries

The world is entering a period of rapid change in how animal products are produced, processed, consumed, and marketed. Most importantly, the prime movers are shifting from the rich countries of the North to the developing countries. Not all the changes are good. What is certain is that they have occurred and it seems almost certain that they will continue. It is clear that many people are directly affected, and in important ways. This project is an attempt to take stock of these changes, and how they affect people in developing countries, with particular reference to socio-economic, health-related and environmental impacts. Particular attention will be devoted to perceiving how these powerful forces can be employed in some fashion to improve life for low income people. The project is based on case studies in four countries that exhibit high growth in their livestock sectors, but also represent a wide diversity of experiences and economic structures. They are: India, the Philippines, Brazil and Thailand. We start with documentation of relevant trends as seen from a global perspective. We then move to summaries of collaborative case studies carried out by collaborating colleagues in the countries concerned. We end with an examination of common themes and the derivation of testable hypotheses for policy research in the second Phase of this project.
