NARRATIVE

The shelf and the area with waters shallower than about 300-500 m outside Tanzania was surveyed in the period 12 November - 3 December 1982. The survey grid (Figs 1 and 2) was similar to that of the cruise earlier this year (June - July).

The 8 hydrographical sections were repeated, and a few more stations were investigated in the shallower parts of the sections.

Scattering layers were identified by pelagic trawl hauls. Average denstities of fish at the bottom were estimated by data from demersal trawl hauls. Four trawl stations were worked parallell with the Mbegani training vessel “Mafunzo”.

In some of the shallower areas fish traps and longlines were applied.

For identification of fish from the western part of the Indian Ocean, FAO is preparing Species Identification sheets.

Mrs Schmidt from FAO participated in the cruise to test and adjust a draft of these sheets.
