1. Introduction

Survey objectives.

The general objectives of the programme as discussed and agreed at the planning meeting in Trinidad, 12-14 January are summarized in the Preliminary Report of Cruise No. I, Part I. In the following the objectives for Survey II are further clarified and amended on the basis of experience from Survey I and from discussions with representatives from the participating countries. Due to unforeseen problems with the vessels maintenance in the repair yard in Curacao the start of Survey II had to be postponed and although the cruise was prolonged, the cruise time had to be cut by 5 days compared with the original plan. During Survey I a fault in the hydraulic system resulted in that no trawling were carried out after passing the Peninsula of Guajira until Santa Marta. It was therefore agreed that the fishing should be intensified in the second coverage of this area. Under these circumstances it was realized that the coverage of the Colombian shelf could not be complete. It was agreed that priority should be given to the investigation of the shelf area east of Santa Marta, and that the programme should be extended westward so far as time permitted. The Colombian participants should however be consulted about details of the programme.
