Native to Europe, including Britain, the beautiful, sky-blue-flowered chicory plant also grows wild throughout temperate Asia and North Africa, North America, Chile, Argentina and South Africa - where it is often dismissed as "just another roadside weed." Yet this plant has been known as a source of food and medicine since antiquity. It was mentioned in Egyptian papyri in 4000 BC. Dioscorides called it "the liver's friend," and Pliny noted its medicinal and mildly laxative properties. Both the roots and leaves are useful.
The roots, toasted and ground, enhance the flavor of coffee or serve as a coffee substitute. Sometimes called "Prussian coffee," because Frederick the Great of Prussia promoted its use, chicory replaced coffee in much of Europe when imports were blocked under Napoleon, and again during the First and Second World wars. Because it contains no caffeine, it is especially suitable for sick children. The leaves may also be cooked as a vegetable, and some farmers use it as fodder for cattle. Chicory, which has a relatively high phosphorous content is used as a stimulant for the stomach and intestines, and to relieve liver complaints. It has also been used in different recipes as a digestive, diuretic, laxative, vermifuge and sudorific. It was once thought to have magical properties associated with the sun - and no doubt sought after by would-be burglars: if collected in silence and cut with a golden knife at midnight or midday of the summer solstice on June 21, it was believed chicory would make its possessor invisible and could open any door when held against the lock.
Common names include the French chicoré, Spanish achicoria, Italian cicoria and German Hindlauf or Wegwarte.

Food Aid in Figures Fisheries-Catches and Landings
These latest additions to FAO's computerized information series expand its statistical coverage to include two timely and controversial subject areas - food aid and fish catches - of crucial interest to policy-makers. The complete set of AGROSTAT databases, which provide statistics ranging over a period of 31 years, can be accessed via a basic personal computer and can be converted to both ASCII and most common spreadsheet format files. Each set of 3.5- or 5.25-inch diskettes is accompanied by a trilingual technical booklet in English, French and · Spanish. Statistics are updated annually at half the original price. A special 35 per cent discount is available for developing countries.
