Synopsis (short abstract) A consultancy was implemented to initiate the brackishwater aquaculture demonstration pilot project at Ban Merbok, Kedah state in Malaysia. The work consisted in selecting site, preparing the design and construction procedure, and setting guidelines for the future operation of the project. There was a question whether to establish the pilot family size small-holder pond demonstration inside or outside a man-made bund in the area. The technical and socio-economic considerations were appraised i n each case and it was determined by the Government Task Force that demonstration outside the bund was more advantageous. The Task Force functioned with the technical advice of this consultancy. To ensure the continuing supply of stocking material for penaeid shrimp and finfish, complementary project consisting of the establishment of a hatchery was also looked into. Prospective sites were surveyed and preliminary selection of the most suitable area was determined. Preliminary guidelines for t he construction and operation of the hatchery were also laid down.     The Lembaga Kamajuan Ikan Malaysia (MAJUIKAN) proposed to establish a Freshwater Aquaculture Centre at Tanjong Tualang, Perak, Malaysia. The Centre is planned primarily to undertake aquaculture operation on a commercial scale. In conjunction with the Fisheries Department, Majuikan has identified three sites in the State of Perak for the project. The site at Tanjong Tualang was finally selected. This report presents the comments, suggestions and recommendations on the design for the proposed si te as made by Wan Mohamed and Khoo SDN BHD, the consulting engineers, to the Government of Malaysia as submitted to the Majuikan in March 1979 (Annex B). This task was made upon the request of the Government. On 1 August, the authors visited the Tanjong Tualang site with Mr. Toran Bin Ishak, State Majuikan Officer, Ipoh, and Mr. Thani, Majuikan official, Kuala Lumpur. The discussions were made at Majuikan office on 2 August 1979 in the presence of Mr. Sabri bin Ahmad, Director for Project Deve lopment of Majuikan, Mr. Bala Rajantharen, also for all of Majuikan, Mr. Chou Choong Keow, Director Mr. R. Santhanaraj, Associate Director of Wan Mohamed & Khoo SDN BHD.

    Technical assistance to the proposed brackishwater aquaculture centre for Madagascar 1979

    This is a report to the Government of Madagascar through the FAO/UNDP project on Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MAG/76/002). The consultant determined the suitability of various mangrove swamp sites identified as available for development for the proposed brackishwater aquaculture development and research centres for the country. After selecting the most suitable site for this project, among a number of alternative sites surveyed in Diego Suarez in the north and Majunga in the northwe st coast, the plan for development and future production management programme are explained. Layout and construction specifications are described.
