    AQUASTAT - Understanding AQUASTAT, FAO's global water information system 2014

    This information note covers a twenty year history of the collection and analysis of water-related data and its dissemina - tion as an international public good, freely available to all. The main country database on water resources and their use—itself a major challenge to present in uniform terms—provides the platform for organizing and presenting over 180 variables and indicators that can be searched and extracted for all countries and for dierent regions over an extensive time period. The process of collecting and checking the data has resulted in the establishment of a unique network of collaborators who provide data, use data from other countries for comparative purposes, and exchange views and expe - riences on how best to measure and account for water-related use. Users range from international private companies to non-governmental organizations, and virtually all signicant reports related to water depend on the data provided by AQUASTAT. New technologies will improve data availability and provide new routes for users to obtain data, but the structure and experience underlying AQUASTAT will certainly remain central and basic to organizing those data and ensuring free international distribution.

    One of the first products developed by AQUASTAT, since its start in 1994, has been the water resources assessment methodology. Even though very useful, during the 20 years that AQUASTAT has been using this methodology it appeared that the methodology is not without shortcomingsand is in some cases overcomplicated. It has become increasingly apparent that some of the main problems should be addressed. Therefore, in March 2015 AQUASTAT has implemented som e changes, which are described in this note.

    This paper describes the rationale and method to setup and feed the FAO global database on municipal wastewater production, collection, treatment, discharge or direct use in agriculture. To feed the database the best available sources of information have been reviewed, including peer-reviewed papers, proceedings of workshops, conferences and expert meetings, global or regional databases, as well as country briefs, national reports and direct communications by country government officials and experts. Data from these sources is selected, analyzed, validated and harmonized based on criteria and rules developed for accuracy and consistency of the information. The validated data are integrated in the online country database of AQUASTAT, FAO’s global information system on water and agriculture, so as to have updated information on availability and use of secondary and non conventional sources of water.
