No results found.This is report is one of a series of Working Papers prepared for the Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Initiative (PPLPI). The purpose of these papers is to explore issues related to livestock development in the context of poverty alleviation. Livestock is vital to the economies of many developing countries. Animals are a source of food, particularly protein for human diets; they provide income, employment and are important assets for the poorer sectors of many societies. For low-income producers, lives tock can serve as a store of wealth, provide draught power and organic fertilizer for crop production and a means of transport. Consumption of livestock and livestock products in developing countries is increasing, and many regions of the developing world have the natural resources necessary to improve livestock productivity. -

No results found.This report is based on a desk review of recent literature on rural poverty reduction in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, and on a synthesis and analysis of existing secondary data sources (see List of References for details). The study builds on the IFAD NENA Rural Poverty Assessment Report prepared in 2001–2002 (and published in 2003). It provides a full update of poverty data to the latest year available, analyses emerging trends, and highlights variations in the rural poverty pr ofile resulting from rapid changes in socio-economic and rural development conditions in the region. In its capacity as a regional assessment (based on a desk review), this report by definition focuses on key rural poverty issues in the 13 highly diverse countries without attempting to propose policy and programme actions at the national or local levels. Explicit country situations are quoted throughout the report in order to illustrate examples of poverty dimensions or specific constraints prev alent in some areas, or in order to underline differences in rural poverty among countries. The specificity of each country and local area, in terms of tailoring actions to meet the needs of different rural target groups, is better analysed at the COSOP or individual IFAD project level. -

No results found.Despite global progress in poverty reduction, around 2.5 billion people still have to make a living on less than $2/day. Most of these poor live in rural areas and agriculture forms an important component of their livelihoods. This paper provides a synoptic global overview of the distribution of purchasing power, expenditure on various food items, poverty, and livestock, which, although crude, clearly demonstrates, that domestic food markets could act as powerful catalysts for poverty reduction, provided the appropriate policy and institutional environments are in place. Public actions should overcome current policy and market failures and link small-scale producers with suppliers of critical inputs and buyers in urban markets, and enable rural producers to understand and satisfy the product, process and delivery standards expected by the increasing number of urban ‘middle-class’ consumers.
