Synopsis (short abstract) Asian Aquaculture industry has achieved rapid growth in the past four decades. Rapid development of aquaculture has contributed significantly to improved nutrition and livelihood in many Asian countries. Aquaculture supplies over 60 percent of food fish for the people and provides over 18 million jobs in the primary production sector. Aquaculture is a relatively new food production sectors compared with crop farming, animal husbandry and other food production sectors. Aquaculture has been developing largely without effectively planning and management in most Asian countries. Lack of effective tools tailed for planning and managing aquaculture in the Asian context was identified as the key technical constraint for improved planning and management of the sector. Responding to the recommendations from APFIC Session and regional consultation, FAO supported the development of aquaculture planning management toolkit as early as in 2013. A FAO regional Technical Cooperation Programme Project supported development of operational manual of four aquaculture planning and management tools selected from the toolkit developed by FAO consultants in 2013 and their piloting in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam in 2016-2017. The publication includes the project implementation summary, final version of tool manuals for aquaculture ecological carrying capacity estimate, feasibility study, farm biosecurity plan development and aquaculture traceability and report on piloting of the four tools in the three countries. It is expected that dissemination of the tool manuals and experiences and lessons from the piloting of the tools with the publication will promote the application of the four aquaculture planning and management tools and interest in developing and applying more tools for improved planning and management of aquaculture in the region.
