Synopsis (short abstract) Thia paper contains the designs of high opening bottom trawls which could be suitable for 50-180 hp small-scale fishing trawlers operating in coastal waters and.large lakes. All neoessaey infomation for the oonstruction of these trawlm as well as for the preparation and adjustment of their rigging is supplied. Thie information is especially intended for small-scale fisheries skippers, and skipper­ owners, and fishing net makers. Fishery officers, technicians, instructors, extension workers, especially in developing countries, are also likely to be interested. The trawls presented in this document were chosen becuase of being simple to construct, easy to use and for adjustment and with proven efficiency in commerical fishery.

    The document provides an overview of the situation that small-scale fishers in developing countries face in terms of: financial and economic performance of fishery enterprises; vulnerabilities and poverty; adaptations to a changing environment including, climate variability and change; and access to technology, infrastructure, financial services and social protection schemes. It also gives due attention to the role of women and gender equality in small-scale fisheries (SSFs). The document also d iscusses SSF issues in a few selected developed countries, states and provinces in order to compare similar issues of importance in SSFs in developed and developing countries and to examine whether something can be learned from the comparison. Most of the studies reviewed show that SSFs are generally profitable. However, many of the studies also point out that this does not mean that the earnings from fishing alone are sufficient to sustain households at a level above the poverty line or above a country’s minimum wage level. Studies found that, particularly during bad fishing seasons and poor catches, households are very dependent on income from non-fishery-related activities and on government assistance.

    This manual aims at providing practical guidance on how to achieve gender-equitable small-scale fisheries in the context of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines. Women play a key role, in particular in post-harvest activities relating to processing, marketing and trade, but their role remains undervalued. Within the broader context of the FAO Blue Growth Initiative, this publication therefore contributes to SP 1 Outcome 101 - Member countries and their development partners make explicit poli tical commitments in the form of policies, investment plans, programmes, legal frameworks and the allocation of necessary resources to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition. The target audience for this manual is twofold: (i) policy makers/public administrations working on small-scale fisheries will be informed about ways to ensure gender-sensitive policies, investments and small-scale fisheries sector support, (ii) CSOs/Fisheries organizations will receive guidance on how to active ly support the empowerment of women in small-scale fisheries. However, this publication is also relevant for other audiences who can provide a support function to the to key audiences, namely: academia/research, donors/resource partners, FAO staff.
