Synopsis (short abstract) This document has been prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in accordance with a request from CITES (CoP Decision 17.191 on Precious corals, for consideration at the 30th meeting of the Animals Committee). The report concerns precious (red, pink, white and black) coral species within the hexacoral order Antipatharia, and the octocoral family Coralliidae. According to the requirements of CITES Decision 17.191, the study considers all available data and information on the biology, population status, use and trade in each species, including the identification of gaps in such data and information. It contains information on the management and harvest regulation schemes for these coral species, with the aim of considering the effectiveness of their management and conservation. The report intends to inform the CITES parties of the status of the management and trade of precious corals, in order to provide guidance on the actions needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of precious corals.

    Regional Workshop on the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs 1997

    The Regional Workshop convened by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme of FAO (BOBP) is designed to address these issues and to develop an action plan for saving the remaining coral reefs in the SAARC region. Since its establishment in 1989, M S S R F has given priority attention to the conservation and sustainable use of Coastal Mangrove ecosystems. In many areas, Mangroves, sea grass meadows and coral reefs constitute an integrated ecosystem. Th e Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve represents one such integrated ecosystem. Currently, a detailed action plan is being prepared with assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) for preserving for posterity the biological wealth of the Gulf of Mannar region.

    Improving Management of Coral Reef And Fisheries in Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles - GCP/RAF/520/JPN 2023

    The Small Island Developing States (SIDS), but also the coastal mainland countries in the region of Africa, are endowed with extensive coral reefs. These fragile ecosystems have been under the threats of climate change, reef degradation, sand mining, and overfishing, as well as IUU fishing. This is undermining fishery resources preservation, leading to a loss of catches and subsequent revenues for many fishing communities depending on them. As such, this project sought to assist in strengthening the management and conservation of coral reefs and its fisheries as key to enhancing the status of resources in the target countries, stopping the downward trend in production and ensuring long-term sustainable fisheries and resilient communities.

    The Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Marine Capture Fisheries in Asia and the Pacific was hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and organized by the Fishery Industries Division of FAO in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA). The findings and recommendations of the Workshop suggest that many countries in Asia and the Pacific benefited and expect to continue to benefit from globalization and deregulation. These benefits include improved quality and better access of their fishery products to markets in other countries within and outside of Asia and the Pacific, increased export earnings, better exchange of technology, increased productivity and efficiency and better supply of fishery products for local populations through liberalization of imports of fishery products. Negative effects of globalization and deregulation identified in the Workshop included increased competition for the small-scale do mestic fisheries sector mainly through import of low priced fish products. It was felt that special measures are needed to protect and strengthen this sector. These included technical assistance, training and investment support as well as possibly fiscal measures and economic incentives.
