    Tree size diversity and carbon stock of Tectona grandis (Linn f.) standsin hilltop and valley-bottom of Omo forest reserve, Nigeria

    Competition for growth resources contributes to size hierarchy in tree populations. Competition hierarchy of trees is dependent on rate of growth and stages of stand development. However, competition hierarchy in tree population may not cause size symmetry in some stress habitats. Size structure and development of even- aged stand can be influenced by abiotic factors. The study investigated tree size structure and carbon stock of Tectona grandis stands in Valley-Bottom and Hilltop of Omo Forest Reserve. Ten-years-old Teak plantation was delineated into Hilltop and Valley-Bottom stands base on topography. Five (30m x 30m) sample plots were systematically demarcated in each of Hilltop and Valley-Bottom stands. Tree stems were enumerated and densities of both stands were estimated. Total height and diameter-at-breast height were measured using Spiegel Relaskop and Girth tape, respectively, and stem carbon was estimated. Inequality and diversity of stem size of both stands were evaluated. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive, correlation, regression analysis and t-test at α0.05. Stem density of Hilltop (1431.0 stems/ha) was higher than Valley-Bottom stands (1248.0 stems/ha). Mean stem diameter of Valley-Bottom were not significantly different from Hilltop stands. Coefficient of determination (R2 ) of Height-Diameter allometry for Valley-Bottom (0.59) was higher than Hilltop stands (0.45). Diameter distribution of Valley-Bottom and Hilltop expressed bimodality and unimodality, respectively. Inequality was higher in Hilltop than Valley-Bottom for diameter. The stems of Hilltop and Valley-Bottom stands contributed 49.68% and 50.32% of total stem carbon, respectively. Elevation affected the stem size hierarchy and carbon stock distribution of Valley-Bottom and Hilltop habitats. Stems of Valley-Bottom stand could be a good option for carbon sequestration in Omo Forest Reserve.     Assessing tree succession, species diversity and carbon sequestration potentials in off-reserve secondary forests for REDD+ implementation in Ghana

    Ghana is losing its primary forest, mostly forest reserves at an alarming rate. Secondary forests play a vital role in tropical landscapes, but few studies exist to assess their regeneration pathways and carbon sequestration in Ghana. We sought to find out the regeneration potentials, species diversity and carbon stocks accumulation of off-reserve secondary forests in the Moist Semi-deciduous and Dry Semi-deciduous zones. Four age classes were studied; 0-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 15+ years. Four plots with three replications were used for each age class. Nested plots were chosen; 33 m x 33 m for trees (dbh≥ 5 cm) 10 m x 10 m for saplings (≥1m tall and dbh <5cm) and 2 m x 2 m for seedlings. Age had significant differences in tree (dbh≥ 5 cm) density and basal area between the sites but not on sapling and seedling densities. A total of 129 tree species with dbh ≥5cm belonging to 95 genera and 40 families were identified. Mean Shannon-Weiner diversity index of trees (dbh ≥ 5cm) was 3.6±0.2 and 3.3±0.3 for the Moist Semi-deciduous and Dry Semi-deciduous zones respectively. Both age and forest site had significant effect on aboveground carbon accumulation with age of forest having more significance than climatic conditions. Age of a secondary forest has more effect on the species composition than climate. The secondary forest depicts the characteristic of young growth where the tree densities of most trees are confined to dbh= 5- 10cm in both zones and the potential of rapid recovery of species and carbon accumulation represents an important source of timber and carbon sink. The strong presence of regeneration portrays the potential for carbon sequestration under Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) if secondary forests are managed well in Ghana. Collaborative management of secondary forests with farmers and good forest polices can help Ghana achieve benefits such as timber, woodfuel, and carbon to participate in REDD+.     Towards transformation of agricultural landscapes: Determination of agroforestry tree species producing beneficial ecosystem services to local farmers in Nigeria

    The aim of this study is to transform agricultural landscapes through incorporating tree species that produce ecosystem services beneficial to local farmers. To achieve this, the study assessed existing diversity of tree species producing ecosystem services in agricultural farmlands in selected local communities of southwest Nigeria. The information obtained will then be used to design strategy for intensification of agroforestry tree species for transformation of agricultural landscapes. Purposive sampling was employed in selecting 66 local farmers who has personal farmlands. Information on available tree species and their diversification on farmlands were obtained through inventory and field observation. Primary information obtained through questionnaire administration include ecosystem services provided by trees on the farmlands. A total of 38 forest tree species (24 families) were identified on the different farmlands. Provisioning services dominated the ecosystem services benefits obtained by the farmers and their households. The study has revealed the different ecosystem services provided by forest trees on farmlands. Meanwhile, most of the farmers prefer trees that meet their personal needs. This means for proper adoption of forest trees at local level in agroforestry system, such trees must be able to meet local demands by providing some of their basic needs. The basic needs range from food to medicines, energy, cultural benefits, among others. Meeting of such needs are sometimes location specifics, hence the needto carry out adequate survey of such needs for intended intervention strategy.
