Synopsis (short abstract) The coastal communities along the Indian Ocean in Puntland and Galmudug have been among the most food insecure in Somalia. As employment opportunities for youth were very limited, a high number of young people remained idle and were exposed to recruitment into criminal activities. Creating employment along the livestock and fisheries value chains, which have real potential for sustained growth, was an opportunity to build robust and resilient livelihoods, reduce unemployment and enhance food security. The Government of Japan contributed USD 1 million to the FAO project to create improved, sustainable livelihood opportunities for youth and women in coastal communities. A youth training and livelihood centre was constructed and young entrepeneurs and women received equipment and were trained in fisheries operations and business. The centre has provided a dedicated space for entrepreneurs to gather, acquire new skills, share knowledge, and enhance their business skills and income.

FSNAU information and analyses facilitated and supported effective evidence-based decision-making in support of humanitarian, recovery and development interventions in response to the worsening humanitarian conditions in Somalia in 2022 and the need for continued and close monitoring of the food security and nutrition situation in the country. To support these efforts, the Government of the United States of America, through the United States Agency for International Development's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, contributed USD 1.6 million to FAO project OSRO/SOM/205/USA, entitled “Support to Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU)”. The project was implemented from 1 January 2022 to 30 June 2023.

The Government of the United States of America contributed USD 22.5 million to the FAO project, "Improved food security and livelihood recovery in Somalia". The project aimed to improve the food security of the most acutely food insecure population groups in rural Somalia. A total of 41 625 households (249 750 people) were supported with cash assistance and agricultural livelihood packages, as part of FAO's cash+ and cash-for-work programmes. Emergency livestock support was also provided through the treatment of livestock against common diseases and training of community animal health workers. Through the Food Security Cluster, the project also strengthened the capacity of cluster partners and coordination of their interventions. Meanwhile, the capacity of government staff to produce and disseminate tailored flood and drought information to be used in the drought response was enhanced through the Somalia Water and Land Information Management.

Improving flood and drought risk management in Somalia – SWALIM

The Government of the United States of America contributed USD 600 000 to the FAO project, "IImproving flood and drought risk management in Somalia – SWALIM", which as implemented from 1 January 2022 to 30 June 2023. The project aimed to contribute to strengthened community resilience by providing early warning information to improve flood and drought risk reduction, preparedness and mitigation. During the project implementation period, FAO’s Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) continued to produce data and information products for flood and drought early warning, which were disseminated to partners for timely lifesaving interventions in Somalia. These included, for instance, water trucking which took place for most of 2022 following a prolonged drought across the country, as well as community evacuation to safe grounds during the recent (May 2023) flooding in Beletweyne. Overall, the project supported affected communities, government institutions and humanitarian partners.
