Synopsis (short abstract) During 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) jointly undertook a project to identify and assess research and data from four Southeast Asian countries related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 14.4.1 – the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels. The goals of this project were: (1) to increase the visibility of research and datasets by making them searchable on OpenASFA, a system for creating, storing and publishing abstracts and bibliographic references; and (2) to analyse knowledge strengths and gaps in the region and make recommendations for improving the accessibility of research and data. This document presents the final report of the project, including the methodology, results and recommendations for future work.

    In recognition of the fisheries sector’s contributions and responsibilities to the global goals, the Sustainable Development Goal Target 14 - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development - includes a target and monitoring indicator specifically related to the sustainability of fish stocks which aims to monitor the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels in order to achieve the target of restoring fish stocks in the shortest time feasible. As part of a larger workshop series on the SDG 14.4.1, the community of Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) countries were invited to participate in a special 3-hour introductory session on 5 August 2021 to present the indicator and reporting process, and participate in discussions towards a reference list of stocks for each country and for the region.

    This case study was conducted to provide a good understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to Egypt’s agricultural research and organizational development to draw lessons and develop supporting guidelines. This study aimed to enhance efforts exerted by Egypt’s NARS in the field of developmental research by formulating an integrated and coherent approach for research and dissemination of proven technologies and practices. Such approaches are expected to address key bottlenecks and provide the needed direction and means for sustainable improved implementation of AR4D. This can ultimately lead to enhancing and empowering the capacity of Egypt’s NARS to better inform and influence policies and facilitate institutional changes required in the agricultural sector. As part of the efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to support and strengthen NARS’ research impact and their links to extension service systems, the present assessment was carried out to establish a deeper insight into challenges and opportunities that are facing NARS in Egypt.
