A regional Workshop on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) in the Southeast (SE) Atlantic Ocean took place in Swakopmund, Namibia, on 15 17 April 2013. The regional workshop is one of a series of regional meetings under the FAO Deep-sea programme focused on VMEs. The workshop aimed to raise awareness and build capacity on VMEs and associated management issues in the SE Atlantic Ocean region. The Workshop discussed the VME concept within the framework of the FAO Deep-sea Guidelines and looked at examples of different management methodologies and options for VMEs, and how these processes can be facilitated. The global VME database was introduced, focusing on how it can support the VME process in the SE Atlantic Ocean region. Furthermore, the workshop identified relevant existing sources of information on deep-sea fisheries and benthic ecosystems, and discussed confidentiality and data sharing issues. Finally, the future requirements and support mechanisms, including a network of e xperts to support the VME process and collaborative arrangements for data sharing, was discussed, in addition to how the FAO Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Deep-sea project could assist with this by working with States and other stakeholders and projects. This Workshop was held immediately following a Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) workshop on Ecologically or Biologically Significant Areas (EBSA), which covered the Atlantic coast region of Africa. To improve understanding a nd to create synergies between the EBSA and VME processes, a short one day Workshop was held on Saturday 13 April 2013, with participants drawn from both the CBD EBSA and FAO VME Workshops. A report of this EBSA-VME Workshop is annexed to this report .

The Workshop for the Development of a Global Database for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs), which was held at the headquarters of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Rome, Italy from 7 to 9 December 2011. The Workshop was organized in response to the need for implementation and development of a Global Database for VMEs. The main objectives of the workshop were to i) determine what types of data and information need to be collated to be most useful in facilitating decision-making for regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements RFMO/As and states (and industry) in relation to management of impacts on VMEs; and ii) to determine a development strategy for options for developing the FAO VME database based on stakeholder input. The workshop was attended by a range of stakeholders, participating in their personal capacity, including representatives of regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements (RFMO/As), intergovernmetnal and non-governmental orgranizations and scientific institutes. Participants discussed five different topical areas 1) overview of RFMO/As VME-related activities, 2) overview of industry perspectives and inputs, 3) experience in VME-related databases and 4) tools and frameworks for the database, and 5) VME database options, priorities and a roadmap. Break-out group discussions pertaining to industry, management and science issues, and addressing database requirements are included under the relevant sections. Main conclusions where agreed upon which pave the way for the development of the VME database.
