The FAO Workshop on the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries and Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the Mediterranean took place from 18 to 20 July 2016 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. The workshop was organized in close collaboration with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). The meeting addressed issues relating to the definition and management of deep-sea fisheries and vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) in the Mediterranean, within the framework of the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (FAO, adopted in 2008; FAO Deep-sea Fisheries Guidelines). The workshop characterized deep-sea fisheries in the Mediterranean, reviewed the current GFCM management measures specific to deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity protection (i.e. the establishment of fisheries restricted areas), and addressed specific issues related to VMEs (such as the use of VME indicator species lists and encounter protocols). The aim of the worksho p was to provide inputs to ongoing discussions within GFCM about required management measures to sustainably harvest deep-sea fish stocks and protect fragile habitats.

This is the “Report of the FAO Workshop on the Global DataBase for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems”, which was held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 7 to 9 May 2014. The workshop was organized in response to the need for implementation and development of a global database for vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs), following an invitation from United Nations General Assembly and a recommendation from FAO’s Committee on Fisheries. The FAO Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems DataBase (VME DataBase) was developed through a consultative process with the first meeting on the VME database being held in Rome, Italy, in December 2011, which developed the framework for its development. The main objectives of this most recent workshop were to review the functionality of the Beta 1 version and submitted information, and to develop a plan with the regional bodies that have management responsibilities for deep-sea species to finalize and release the VME DataBase including the identification of further n eeds and plans for future developments. Preparation for the workshop involved prior collaboration with regional fisheries bodies on the DataBase. Comments were received through D-Groups and a circulated questionnaire. The workshop was attended by representatives of the regional bodies with the competence to manage deep-seas fisheries and independent experts present in their personal capacity. The workshop was divided into five sessions: 1: Introduction to VME DataBase and possible future “portal ”; 2: Reviews and detailed discussions; 3: Regional input, approval and information; 4: Conclusions and list of actions; and 5: Policies and future priorities. Main recommendations were agreed upon that pave the way for the further development of the VME DataBase. In particular, it was agreed to release the VME DataBase by mid-September 2014 with essential modifications requested during the workshop implemented, and content validated by the partner data providers concerned.

The workshop, which was organised by FAO in was organised in close collaboration with the University of Washington and the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF), took place in FAO, Rome, on 16-18 June 2015. In addition to FAO staff and consultants, 26 researchers and MPA practitioners from Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin and North America, and South Asia participated in a mix of plenary presentations, working-group discussions and feedback with plenary-based syntheses and future dire ctions. This report is the output of this workshop which was convened to bring together experts from different disciplines and parts of the world for an initial discussion that would lay the foundation for one or more future working groups that would examine how MPAs affect fisheries and fish and fishing communities, and provide guidance on how to optimise biodiversity, fisheries and livelihoods benefits. The workshop agreed on some tentative elements that could form the basis for further globa l and regional analyses including fisheries, environmental, social, economic and governance dimensions. The workshop outcomes provide a basis for further collaboration through multidisciplinary including experts from around the world.
