This report is an overview over the present distribution of mangrove swamps in Thailand, and describes the kinds and extent of aquatic pollution. It reviews the recent studies of mangrove composition and occurrence of fauna and secondary flora in some mangrove forests and adjacent tidal flats. The mangrove areas are further characterized by physical and chemical data of the waters, tides, currents, temperature, and further by the types of land use. The findings of aquatic pollution from various industries are described, but concentrate naturally on the more industrialized areas around the Upper Gulf of Thailand and the Upper Gulf itself. The discussion on pollution effects on mangrove ecosystem considers riverine and sea-based pollution. There are, however, not many studies made although some drastic cases have shown the pollution threat and damaging potential. The report finally identifies the gaps in understanding of the mangrove ecosystem and the impact of human activities, lists pr iority research needs on national basis as well as for international - regional - cooperation.

Final evaluation of the project “Integrated management of mangrove and associated wetlands and coastal forest ecosystems in the Republic of the Congo”

The project "Integrated management of mangroves and associated wetlands and coastal forest ecosystems in the Republic of the Congo" was implemented between July 2013 and December 2017 by the Government of the Republic of the Congo and FAO. The main phase of the final evaluation, which took place between July and August 2017, covered all the activities carried out under the different components. The evaluation recognized the relevance of the intervention given by its effort to develop and promote a community-based forest management system in the Congo. The project contributed to strengthening the national legislative and institutional framework on mangrove ecosystems, yet additional efforts are still necessary to mobilize the resources needed to implement the strategy and the plan developed as part of the project. At the time of the evaluation, no concrete activities had been implemented at community level, nevertheless the project contributed to having good awareness among communities on the importance of mangrove ecosystems.

Promotion of initiatives to ensure the sustainability of the mangrove crab fishery and its value chains in Madagascar 2014
    Also available in:

The mangrove crab fishery (Scylla scerrata) in Madagascar is an exclusively traditional fishing activity. Crab fishers walk or canoe through the mangroves and use very simple techniques and fishing gear such as a line or a hook mounted on a stick. It is estimated that about 80,000 people are involved in fishing and collecting mangrove crabs in Madagascar. Fishing and landing sites are often very difficult to access, and storage and transport facilities are very rudimentary: this is a sector that has significant post-harvest losses. In recent years, some mangrove areas – those most easily accessible - have already been over-exploited, resulting in a reduction in the average size of crabs caught.
