Synopsis (short abstract) Women play key roles in rural economies, where the fight against hunger and poverty is most pressing. They are also central to family food security and nutrition. However, compared to their male counterparts, rural women typically face multiple gender-based constraints – particularly in their access to productive resources (e.g. land, technologies, training and services) and economic opportunities (e.g. access to markets and decent employment) – which prevent them from becoming equally competiti ve economic players. Gender equality can be foster through practical policy measures. The Gender in Agricultural Policies Assessment Tool (GAPo) is a toolkit that FAO developed to support national governments and their development partners to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment in the agriculture sector. Its purpose is to assist a core group of stakeholders to carry out a participatory process of diagnosis, analysis and reflection on gender equality gaps in policies and implementati on, with a view towards outlining concrete policy steps to address those gaps.

    Female farmers, who make up on average 43 percent of the agricultural labour force, face gender-specific barriers which limit their agricultural productivity compared with that of men. These constraints include lack of access to rural advisory services (RAS) and producers’ organizations. Improving women’s access to RAS can help close the gender gap in agriculture by making information, new technologies, skills, knowledge, and other productive resources more accessible to female farmers. The GRAS T provides: • A methodology for assessing the gender-sensitiveness of RAS and organizations; • feedback on areas of the RAS provision that need improvement or that are working well. The tool focuses on three areas of inquiry (the enabling environment, the institutional level, and the individual level) and is expected to help systematize good practices and lessons learned to provide targeted policy advice and capacity development to member countries working towards gender-equitable rural adviso ry services.

    The adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices at scale requires appropriate institutional and governance mechanisms to facilitate the dissemination of information and to ensure broad participation by relevant stakeholders and targeted beneficiaries. Among the drivers influencing CSA adoption, the understanding of how gender could influence the effectiveness of these instruments is capturing increasing attention in the literature. The aim of this note is to provide some insight on the data and tools necessary when dealing with the analysis of the effects of CSA on food security, focusing on a gender perspective.This note should serve as guidance for readers that would like to engage in the study of CSA and gender. In general, this note does not aim to be comprehensive and complete, but it indicates the main challenges and tools identifiable for this type of study.
