Synopsis (short abstract) In order to safeguard the important role that marine capture fisheries play with regard to employment, income and food security, up-to-date information on the sector is needed to monitor the effect of management measures, regulations and government policies on its economic and financial health. This paper presents the findings of studies on the economic and financial performance of marine capture fisheries carried out in 13 African, Asian, Caribbean, European and South American countri es during 2002 and 2003, replacing previously published results from 19992000 and 19951997. It includes the 94 most important fishing fleets operating in these countries that generally experienced positive gross cash flows and fully recovered their operating costs. The overall sustained positive earnings situation in 20022003, as compared with 1999 and 2000, should be seen against a background of increased fuel prices an important cost component of capture fisheries that averaged ab out nine percent for both years and of a decline in fish prices of up to five percent. The paper also contains the findings of two recent empirical studies on fishing efficiency that were presented at the 2004 Session of the FAO/ICES Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour.

    With financial support from the Government of Japan, an FAO project was initiated in 2001 to address issues related to factors of overexploitation and unsustainability in fisheries, as a way to improve the framework for the implementation of international fisheries instruments. Within the framework of this project, three international workshops were held in order to review the implementation of international fisheries instruments and to attain a worldwide overview of what factors contr ibute to unsustainability and overexploitation in fisheries. Further, in order to attain a regional perspective on such factors, particularly in relation to the specific issues or the constraints and opportunities facing developing countries, three regional workshops were held focusing on the southern Mediterranean, West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. This document contains the reports of these regional workshops, including supporting technical documentation.

    This publication provides an overview of the current status of capture fisheries insurance in the world. It presents the findings of a number of regional and national review desk studies carried out between December 2006 and January 2008 covering China, Japan and India in Asia, Europe, Africa, the United States of America in North America, South America, Oceania and the Russian Federation. A summary synthesis of the studies is included along with information about the insurance marke t, demand and supply issues, perils covered, vessels insured, risk management methods applied and underwriting experiences. It contains conclusions and practical recommendations for improvement of capture fisheries insurance services and for increasing access to and availability of fisheries insurance for small- and medium-scale fishers in developing countries.

    The purpose of this document is to provide suggestions for the interpretation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator 6.4.1. In particular, it focuses on the concept of economic decoupling from water-use, and its application in policy making. The evolution in water-use and water-use efficiency in four selected regions: Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, is discussed. Particular attention is given to the evolution in water-use, water-use efficiency and related drivers in two groups of countries, including major developed economies and newly industrialized countries, and in different economic sectors. The relation of water-use efficiency with economic growth and access to safe drinking water is analyzed and discussed in the context of the literature on the Environmental Kuznets Curve applied to water resources. A country-based example is presented to illustrate some aspects of these issues and a few concluding remarks are provided.
