No results found.El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability is probably the best known mechanism of global climate variability, with large effects on marine ecosystems and particularly on small pelagic populations. However, major changes of small pelagic (abundance regimes) tend to occur on the interdecade scale, rather than with the interannual variability normally associated to ENSO. Despite some recent research, the role of ENSO variability at determining interdecadal climate variations (climate regimes ) is still a matter of controversy. In this work, we searched for statistical relationships between small pelagic and climate regimes and ENSO activity, and between these and indices of extratropical and solar variations over the interdecadal time scale...etc. -

No results found.In order to contribute to the sustainable development goals, capture fisheries and aquaculture sectors have been assigned important tasks to support the food security and improved nutrition and eradication of poverty through realizing blue economic growth (Sustainable growth of economies derived from marine and inland water ecosystems and living aquatic resources) with responsible and efficient use of marine and inland water and associated natural resources and conservation of marine and inland water ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity. Given the global leading position of Asian fisheries in production and direct dependence on the sector, the Asia and Pacific Region will need to take a leading role in achieving the goal considering its current share in global fish production and trends of the sectoral development in the different regions. -

No results found.The CCLME project objective is to “enable the countries of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem to address priority transboundary concerns on declining fisheries, associated biodiversity and water quality through governance reforms, investments and management programs”. A Preliminary TDA has confirmed the focus of regional concern on depleted fisheries and on habitat, associated biodiversity and water quality critical to fisheries. The principal outcomes of the project will be: 1) Multi-cou ntry agreement on priority transboundary issues; 2) Multi-country agreement on 6 governance reforms and investments to address priority transboundary issues; 3) A sustainable legal/institutional framework for the CCLME; 4) Strengthened existing transboundary waters institutions and regional policies and instruments; 5) Stakeholders’ involvement in transboundary water-body priority setting and strategic planning; 6) Improved knowledge and capacity to address concerns on ‘Marine Living Resources’; 7) Improved knowledge and capacity to address concerns on ‘Biodiversity, Habitat and Water Quality’; 8) Demonstrated management actions and related costs/benefits valuations addressing priority transboundary concerns on ‘Marine Living Resources’ (project component 2) and ‘Biodiversity, Habitat and Water Quality’ (component 3). Specific actions to address transboundary concerns prior to the SAP will include multi-country policy proposals (as annexes to the SAP), legal, and institutional reforms, demonstrations of shared stock management, selective trawling gear, MPAs for fisheries and mangrove restoration.

No results found.The Business Development Portfolio contains FAO's most relevant programme priorities, inviting its partners to increase their investment in food and agriculture to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Portfolio is organized around 12 focus areas, each highlighting a set of programmes that demonstrates where partnerships can tangibly scale up results. FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and all forms of malnutrition. The selection of programmes has been thoroughly screened by FAO's Business Development Task Force, composed of representatives from FAO's Strategic Programme Teams and Regional Offices. The chosen programme Areas are based on FAO's Medium term Plan and Member expectations. They are clearly aligned with achieving the SDGs and reflect: - successful results to be scaled up or replicated elsewhere - new and innovative initiatives, and/or - a response to emerging global concerns. The Portfolio is dynamic and will be refreshed and updated as parternships evolve. -
