No results found.Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been clearly identified as a major global health challenge. It is a leading cause of human deaths and also has a toll on animals, plants, and the environment. Despite the considerable socio-economic impacts, the level of awareness of the problem remains woefully inadequate, and antimicrobials are not generally recognized as a global common good, one that everyone has a role and responsibility to conserve. It is imperative for antimicrobial stewardship to be more widely implemented to achieve better control of the AMR phenomenon. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations plays an important role in promoting and facilitating antimicrobial stewardship. The specific needs to be addressed and barriers to be overcome, in particular, in low- and middle-income countries in order to implement antimicrobial stewardship practices in agrifood systems are being identified. As a global community, it is essential that we now move beyond discussing the AMR problem and focus on implementing solutions. Thus, FAO provides multi-pronged support for nations to improve antimicrobial stewardship through programs to strengthen governance, increase awareness, develop and enhance AMR surveillance, and implement best practices related to antimicrobial resistance in agrifood systems. For example, FAO is developing a platform to collect data on AMR in animals and antimicrobial use (AMU) in plants (InFARM), working on a campaign to reduce the need to use antimicrobials, studying the use of alternatives to the use of antimicrobials (especially those used for growth promotion) and actively promoting the implementation of the Codex Alimentarius AMR standards. Together, these will contribute to the control of AMR and also bring us closer to the achievement of multiple sustainable development goals -

No results found.The regional training workshop on “Enhancing Effective Participation in Codex Activities: developing science-based national positions and contributing scientific data to the Codex standard-setting activities” in Tokyo, Japan was conceptualized in order to final validate the training manual on enhancing the effective participation in Codex activities. This Training Workshop was held on 5-7 December 2018 in Shin-Yurakucho Building, Tokyo, Japan. The activity was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Japan in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations- Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAORAP). A total of thirty six (36) participants were personnel from nine ASEAN countries’ agencies mainly responsible for food safety control, food standard development, and international food standards, as well as, personnel from MAFF of Japan and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan in the three-day training workshop. This document reports on this training workshop. The workshop evaluation results shown that participants gave an excellent rating as to the quality of the workshop in general. Participants were appreciative of the mock session as this provided them with the knowledge and experience on how to effectively and actively participate in Codex sessions as well as how to develop negotiation skills through a simulation of a real Codex Committee session. -

No results found.A regional training workshop entitled “Enhancing Effective Participation in Codex Activities in ASEAN Countries” as a part of the FAO regional project “Support for Capacity Building for International Food Safety Standard Development and Implementation in ASEAN Countries (GCP/RAS/295/JPN)” was held on 9-11 January 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. The five-year regional project was launched in February 2016 with financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The project has already carried out significant activities, including the organizing of two national training courses in Lao PDR and Myanmar, and the identification of the current conditions/baselines and challenges on the implementation of international/national standards in each ASEAN country. Main objectives of the regional workshop were to provide participants with: 1) an enhanced understanding of the impact of Codex standards on international trade, structure and function of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), up-to-date information of recent Codex meetings, food safety risk analysis and risk assessment including the role of scientific expert bodies such as JECFA, JMPR and JEMRA, 2) An opportunity to share knowledge and experience on current national Codex activities in ASEAN countries, and 3) Training on development of regional/national positions through mock sessions to enhance participants’ capacity to contribute effectively to Codex work. 29 participants from ten ASEAN countries from the agencies mainly responsible for food safety control with regard to standard development and implementation as well as the work of the Codex have attended. Many resource persons from Japan, Thailand, ASEAN Secretariat, Food Industry Asia, AETS and FAORAP contributed to the workshop.
