Synopsis (short abstract) The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) was established at COP23 to address six topics in the agricultural sector's role in climate change. KJWA has contributed to sharing scientific and technical knowledge, but limitations remain in translating outcomes into concrete climate actions. The new four-year joint work on the implementation of climate action on agriculture and food security, which prioritizes ending hunger and considers national circumstances, includes the creation of an online portal for sharing information. The four-year agenda is shaped and broadened through the submission of views by parties, observers, and civil society and will be considered by SBSTA and SBI in June 2023.

    Climate Change (UNFCCC), Parties adopted Decision 3/CP.27 establishing the Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on the Implementation of Climate Action on Agriculture and Food Security (SJWA). The new Joint Work builds on the outcomes and recommendations of the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) process, representing a critical step towards its implementation, that of previous activities addressing issues related to agriculture under the UNFCCC, as well as future topics, recognising that solutions are context-specific and take into account national circumstances.The purpose of this technical note is to provide an update on the UNFCCC negotiations on agriculture and food security since the adoption of the SJWA at COP27 in 2022. The note outlines the various agreed elements of the SJWA, the submission of views by Parties and observers to the UNFCCC in 2023, and the key elements of the new SJWA road map agreed at SB60 in 2024. It also provides an initial mapping of the implementation of the Koronivia outcomes, as well as decisions and initiatives related to agrifood systems at recent COPs. The note also presents the main results of support before COP28 in December 2023 and to the Sixtieth meeting of the UNFCCC’s Subsidiary Bodies (SB60) in June 2024, and provides key recommendations on the way forward for the successful implementation of the SJWA road map and targets in the run-up to COP31.

    The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) was established in November 2017, as a new process to advance discussions on issues related to agriculture under the two Subsidiary Bodies (SBs) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). The decision recognizes the fundamental importance of agriculture in responding to climate change, and calls for joint work between the SBs on specific elements, including through workshops and expert meetings.This analysis aims to summarize the views submitted on KJWA topic 2(a): Modalities for implementation of the outcomes of the five insession workshops on issues related to agriculture and other future topics that may arise from the joint work on agriculture. The summary intends to make the wide range of views submitted more easily accessible to those interested – including Parties and observers to the UNFCCC, but also FAO staff working on climate change as well the public. The analysis takes into consideration the 17 submissions by Parties and the 14 by observers on topic 2(a) of the KJWA, submitted on KJWA topic 2(a) by 10 December 2018.
