    The project has helped to improve partnerships between national statistics offices, ministries of agriculture, and other stakeholders with expertise in the relevant new technologies, including GIS experts and departments in other ministries, academic institutions, and international and regional organizations. The project has complemented other projects and programmes involved in building capacity regarding the SDG indicators through the use of the cost-effective methods introduced. Integrating Big Data with traditional survey and census data has also enabled users to analyse and monitor, inter alia, the impact of natural disasters on different types of farmers and the effects of climate change on female-headed agriculture households.

    This case study summarizes the experience of the use of System for Earth Observation Data Access, Processing and Analysis for Land Monitoring (SEPAL) in Uganda by the National Forest Authority (NFA) and its integration into the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), as a result of a long-standing partnership that began in 2013 between Uganda’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing team and the National Forest Monitoring team from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

    This publication serves as a guide for countries in exploring how reporting for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators under FAO custodianship serves the scope of compiling information for the biennial transparency reports (BRT) under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF). The paper intends to demonstrate the potential integration of adaptation reporting with SDG and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) global measurable targets and corresponding indicators to advance towards a common understanding of how to track adaptation while informing progress towards the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). It is aimed primarily at technical authorities and experts working on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation in the agriculture sectors and compiling information to report on adaptation at national and international levels. Secondly, it is aimed at policy- and decision-makers that can use M&E evidence to inform adaptation planning, both in the agriculture sectors specifically and as part of broader national adaptation planning, implementation, and budgeting processes.
