Synopsis (short abstract) Climatic, political and economic shocks continue in Afghanistan, where two out of every five people face high levels of acute food insecurity. Severe and widespread drought, in addition to an extremely harsh winter, have impacted farmers already affected by the rising cost of inputs. With 80 percent of families dependent on agriculture for their food and income, humanitarian livelihoods support is critical. In 2022, every USD 1 spent to protect rural livelihoods saved around USD 7 in additional humanitarian assistance, generated further income for Afghan families and supplied food in local markets. FAO requires USD 252.4 million to assist 8 million people in Afghanistan in 2023.

    With the conflict now in its thirteenth year, the Syrian Arab Republic continues to face insecurity, economic crisis, drought-like conditions and severe agroclimatic fluctuations. An estimated 12.1 million people are food insecure, of which 49 percent live in rural areas. Without urgent support, an additional 2.9 million people are at risk of becoming food insecure. Humanitarian response to support farming and livestock‑keeping families with restoring their production is critical. Every USD 1 invested to help a farmer grow wheat yields more than 4.5 times its value in staple food produced, for that family, their local community and markets.

    In Guatemala, food security and nutrition needs are at their highest in recorded history. The most food-insecure populations are made up of subsistence farmers whose reserves have been depleted and who face difficulties in planting due to high costs of inputs and fuel. Heavy floods have also caused extensive damage to crops and livestock, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. Restoring household food production is essential to reduce hunger in Guatemala. However, less than 1 percent of humanitarian funding to food sectors goes to support the agricultural livelihoods of families in need.

    Food insecurity is worsening in Myanmar, where more than a quarter of the population, 15.2 million people, are experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity. The combined impacts of conflict, political instability, economic crisis and longstanding poverty leave millions unable to access basic services and struggling to meet their families’ food needs. With three in four people dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, humanitarian support to restore rural households’ production is critical.
